Contests Contests Contests [Kit Kat Photography, Listowel, Ontario photographer]

I took some time off during the Christmas holidays to unwind. It was great.
Slowly easing back into the work week, half days turned into three-quarter days which turned into full days (which can be 8 hours or 12/14 hours depending on the season’s busyness.)

And so we begin a New Year, and the new plans for contests for my fans and supporters.
You are all so very special to me. I am so honoured to see your posts, read your emails, see the image I took at a session (even 2 years ago) being used as your profile photo or Timeline cover. Those moments make my heart smile.

February brings us to one of the shortest but also the last of the winter months. I call it the “last” because spring is officially charted on March 21st, so for me, my brain accepts that February is the last month of the winter. Call it denial if you will. I call it selective reasoning. *chuckles*

February 2014 had a hugely successful couple’s contest. We often think of associating couple and Valentine’s Day with “a couple in love”. For me – my concept is a twosome (couple) that love each other. In my mind (don’t go there, puh-lease) it is the love between you and a sweetie, an animal companion and even reptiles are eligible. I wonder if I’ll get a surprise entry for 2016?

I’m an artist with an oh-so busy mind. This means I don’t live my life in a typical way – it can be crazy to witness, but I love how I view life. So – the creative side of me wants you to be creative too and choose your companion for your entry.
What photo will you send in for the photo contest?

Remember that the RULES specify that the prize is of the twosome in the photo entry, so be mindful of your entry. And realistic. The photo of you and the dolphin you had taken at SeaWorld last winter may not be a feasible entry. (as much as I would love to have you pay for my trip south to take your photo there! *big smile*)

Submissions close on January 25th and voting ends on January 30th. Good Luck everyone!

The mysterious mind of an artist (me)

I am not often without my camera bag, especially if there is a drive somewhere. As a seasoned photographer, I know all too well that there can very well be THAT image just waiting for me. And I want to be prepared for what might present itself.

As a visual artist, my eyes are often scanning the horizon or city blocks. It’s not the hunt for THAT picture, but rather, this is how my right brain works. It’s a busy brain you see, composing internally and knowing just when to stop and and zero in on what I want to take home forever.
Being busy as a portrait photographer, many of you don’t get to see the recreational images I capture.

I find beauty in the most bizarre of items and scenes. The mind of an artist is sometimes (okay, often) a mysterious place. I don’t think we can be categorized or put into a box. Which makes the artists’ community such a colourful place to be. Just like life. Our planet. Each day is different. Every time you open your eyes, the scene before you unfolds in a new and exciting manner. You can’t beat living life in this way. I know I love it to bits.

I’m a happy girl in all sorts of places. Near the water. Behind the lens. In the kitchen. In a yarn store.
Chocolate shop. Fabric store. The list goes on and on…

If you’re just a little curious to see what other moments I’ve captured over the years, visit my Flickr page, where I joined in 2007. It’s not as current these days as I was back then, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy the visit.
Be sure to format the gallery into slideshow mode for a pretty cool experience.

cheers!

2014 Year in Review

Does one take the time at the end of a year to ponder about their accomplishments, or what they might not have checked off their annual to-do list?

I’m not one to make resolutions, so I take each day as it comes. I appreciate the little things in life and the big things, like my clients *smiles* I’m not frustrated by what I hadn’t accomplished, such as learning to sew a quilt the past two winters, but rather appreciate that I was busy with my life behind the lens. It is one of my most happiest places.

What I am able to share on the blog in limited fashion, or on Facebook in bits and pieces is the tip of the iceberg as to what my camera actually captures. Did you know that I have a vast digital library of scenes from all over Ontario? Hooray for road trips. I’m also a huge fan of street, food and macro floral photography.

So while my Year in Review for 2014 shows off my talents as a portrait photographer, you might just get to see more of what else puts a smile on my face. Stay tuned for some creative work shared on a more frequent basis this year.

Mrs Claus visits North Perth Public Library

One of my favourite community events to help out each year happens when Mrs Claus comes to say hello to the little ones at the North Perth Public Library. Being part of the wonders of Christmas by viewing it through the eyes of a child is one of life’s best moments. Don’t you agree?

This year I had the delight of offering some “Frozen” inspired theme sessions.
It was great to see all the girls arrive in their glittery outfits. Princess Ella is a big hit in a lot of families with daughters.

As part of my business, I am often crafting by way of sewing, knitting, hot glueing and creating new sets for photo sessions. It was no different when it came to providing an Ella costume for little ones aged six months to 3 years. Dressing up is such fun for the girls and I know how much the moms love the images I capture. Everyone was smiling at the end, me included!

I’ll still be offering sessions after the New Year, so please drop me a line and let’s book your daughter’s princess shoot.

Thanksgiving weekend was wonderful. The weather held nicely and I was able to finish the fall family sessions. With a warm 17C high on Thanksgiving Monday, it was a great end to the last of the outdoor sessions for a while.

The “What are you thankful for” contest that ran on the blog had two random winning names chosen.
First prize was won by Mariette Follings. Congratulations on your gift of a lovely headband and scarf set from Little Jem’s Boutique and a mini session with Kit Kat Photography.

The second prize went to Brittany Readman who won a $25 gift certificate towards any photo session with Kit Kat Photography.

Congratulations to both winners and I look forward to your sessions!

The bond between a dog and his human.

I was delighted to be asked to capture some portraits of a gal and her Saint Bernard, Levi.  I’m a huge animal lover and anytime I can capture some bonding moments between a human and their animal companion, it makes my heart all warm and fuzzy.

Levi had just gone for a biopsy on his hind leg after the vet suspected cancer.  Oh ya, the C word.  So the shoot was bittersweet.  Levi with all four legs and his mama doing her best to have the swelling gone around her eyes from crying.
The shoot tugged at my heartstrings. Watching Levi, with his largeness, cuddle up with his mama on the grass, sitting pretty for photo after photo. He was just the coolest dog.

Mama held it together and knew by the look on my face that I would have some amazing shots to present to her. I cannot thank the universe enough for granting us all that day, weatherwise, energy wise for Levi and doggie-mama for her brave spirit in such a dark time in her life.

At just four years, Levi was much too young to be in this position. Facing the loss of a beloved animal companion is never easy, whether young or old. It wasn’t fair.  It never is.

July came and went. Levi had his leg amputated. The vet advised his mama that the outcome was not bright. It was an aggressive cancer. I blogged a bit about it after I visited his mama with her print order.
Levi adjusted seemingly well to his life on three legs. Life on the farm went back to some normalcy. He was such an amazing dog. He wanted to keep up with the other big dogs.
Chemo was scheduled. First round. Second round and then, poof, Levi crossed the rainbow bridge suddenly.

It is with great sadness to share that Levi has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Fall Contest

Tags

,

The Fall Facebook contest went by in a flash. A new countdown method and the winning numbers being chosen by random.org gave me two winners in a matter of just two hours! That was definitely a quickie!
Both winning families came for their sessions a couple weeks ago and I’ve put together some of my favourites from their sessions to share with you all.
As much as the rain this past week may have brought down a whole batch of leaves, it’s always a pretty autumn scene in the Kit Kat Studio.
I’m available for some last minute bookings before the holiday sessions begin.
Give me a shout using the contact tab.
Pricing is on the web. Click the link on the sidebar 🙂
